arranging the living room

I am really struggling to arrange this room! I definitely don't like the dresser in the corner...it's just temporary to put the tv on. I was thinking that getting some kind of white shelf to put the tv on would look better, but maybe I should just cave in and put the tv on the mantle. I don't know if it's possible to keep the tv in the corner there without it looking bad. If I put the tv on the mantle there will be plenty of space for books on both sides and the speakers, and I think the composition of the room will look more harmonious. it's too bad though because I hate making the tv such a central point of a room. we don't even have tv and only watch movies.

I just crammed all my books into that corner. this looks kind of cool in a way, but it definitely won't work long term.

does anybody have any ideas for me?

  1. stack and line books across the mantel, throwing in a few objects as well. line/stack books across the floor on both sides of the mantel as well. or on low shelves on either side. Will create a nice line of color/stacked objects that travels across the wall.

No tv on the mantel!!! Especially if you only watch movies. Find a simple armoire or cabinet or sideboard that you can place the tv in. Then books and interesting things can go on top.

Just my two cents. Or ten!

  2. Hi,

You are brave to open yourself to suggestions. I like the vibe. You have cool stuff.

Yes the obvious is to put the TV but it would be nice if the fireplace opening were lighter in color.

If you don't like that idea. . .

It really seems like all the color (the books) should be stacked in varied height piles on the mantle or spread out at both sides of the fireplace in low open matching shelves. I do think that you should have something above the fireplace.

Also you could paint your fireplace a different color or in a higher gloss white to make it pop.

Can you paint the black inside or screen white as well?

It's hard too see your options for furniture placement without seeing beyond the perimeter.

Your couch should come forward and the coffee table should be on the rug.

There is no reference point for the red chair. You could put pillows on the couch that have red in them to balance the room. Or- the chair would look great if reupholstered in one of the apricot colors in the rug. You would still need a couple of pillows on the couch.

The chairs are a bit tight to the wall and should come forward to the edge of the rug but not on it.

Your beautiful chrome floor lamp is lost with the books as a backdrop.

I am also really seeing a hanging light fixture centered on the windows and the fireplace.

    Shades?

Okay, so all in all the basic things are move the TV unless you can paint the inside of the fireplace, because now you see too big black rectangles.

Try to achieve height and color balance on either side of the fireplace. This does not mean that both sides should have the same things, just that the heights match.

If the light part of the rug is cream then the walls should not be so white or visa versa.

Is there a table between the chairs? A lamp would be nice.

    Good Luck.!
