kate lanphear was mentioned on fashion toast today...her style is amazing! she definitely makes black and grey so interesting. I'd love to dress like her, but I think I couldn't pull off such a look. I grabbed these photos off the fashion spot.

coyuchi and indika
I wanted to get some organic sheets and towels for the new house. We are moving in this weekend, even though the house isn't done. Our lease is up on our rental, and we have to move. It's going to be a busy weekend!
I got this duvet cover from coyuchi made from linen and cotton. It's really natural and peaceful looking.
I also bought a couple of these really soft towels from indika. The wavey pattern is really cool and reversible. I got the white and tan ones:
I usually love colors and bright patterns, but I think in the new house I'm going to try to keep things simple and serene. We'll see how long that lasts. :P

new cabinets

The wall cabinets went in today. The kitchen looks so good! I'm so happy we made those changes to the layout at the last minute. It's so much better now.
more pictures of the new house here.

drought-tolerant yard

I love this yard of drought-tolerant ornamental grasses that I saw on pardon our dust. We should do something like this for our yard at the new house, so we don't have to water it. It should be pretty tolerant to the salt air too. I definitely don't want to get a regular lawn.
house update
the cabinets are going in which is really exciting. we discovered that the island was blocking pathways to walk in the house, which is not so exciting. we moved the island into the kitchen instead of having it halfway into the hallway, which made no sense. the island also felt really far away from the kitchen sink.
we are also going to make it shorter by removing that middle piece so it's easier to walk between the island and the dining table. this means we have to move all the electrical for the lighting, but we already had to move a lot of electrical that was installed wrong anyways.
the ikea vanity actually look really nice. the color matches the bambu tile really well. I adore the huge sink. the electrical and the space for the medicine cabinet were not centered on the vanity and had to be redone too.
redoing all these things is very annoying and stressful. we were supposed to be done with our renovations more than a month ago! we ended up switching contractors, and I feel much more confident that this will get done well with the new guys. it seems to be going really well so far. I've learned my lesson...ALWAYS get at least 3 bids and ALWAYS check references!!!

kitchen appliances and sink
I haven't been keeping my blog updated with all the things we chose for our house, so I thought I'd make a bunch of posts today about it.
I decided to go with all white appliances. I didn't want the appliances to stand out against the white cabinetry, and I'm also getting bored of stainless steel appliances. I chose this GE Profile gas range:
It is really highly rated in its price range on all the reviews I read. It's supposed to be wonderful for baking and really easy to clean. It also has two ovens which is really exciting!
I chose a simple white fridge from amana. I really like how the freezer is on the bottom and is a drawer instead of a door. It just makes so much more sense.
I don't really like dishwashers, but we got one anyways because we figured it would factor in when someone else buys our house some day. I just got this simple white one from bosch, which is highly reviewed and supposed to run really quietly:
I bought this huge white bianco sink. We got an overmount sink to protect the bamboo and the ikea cabinets. This sink is supposed to be really resistant to staining because it's 80% granite.
I absolutely love the hansgrohe faucet we bought for the sink. The end of it pulls out, so it's really easy to wash dishes. I think we might have bought brushed steel or satin nickel and not chrome, but I can't remember.
kitchen countertops
my inspiration for our countertops:
we are getting carrera marble for our island except we plan to have an overhang on the island for counter stools. I think we also might use the marble to make a sill for the kitchen window.
For the rest of the kitchen, we are using this darker bamboo edge grain countertop:
This is what the edges of the countertop will look like:
Our cabinetry is really similar to those in the top photo. I think those are ikea cabinets like ours, but we chose a glossy white finish instead of flat. Our floors are similar too, red oak. I think it's going to be nice! The natural materials for the countertops will keep the glossy white cabinetry from feeling cold. Both materials are somewhat high maintenance, but I love the look and am happy we bought eco-friendly bamboo. I also am really excited to make pies on the marble island!
kitchen pendant lighting
I bought 3 of kathleen hills' bone china pendant lights for over our island. I chose the one on the right that is lit up:
Over the dining room table, I chose the vintage holmegaard light from ebay. It's really big, and I love the chocolate color:

besa lights
I had to find some reasonably priced lighting fixtures for over the kitchen sink and the bathroom. I found all these nice lights from besa for a pretty good price.
For over the sink, I chose this light with the swing arm. The fixture isn't actually going to be directly over the sink but rather centered over the kitchen window. I like the swing arm because we can adjust it and put the light over the sink if we want to.
I got this really cool glass shade that looks kind of like it's made of a thin sheet of wood:
For the bathroom, I chose these simple glass cubes:
