we got new window blinds in the big window in the living room. I picked these because they are opaque at night and because they move from bottom to top as well as from top to bottom. it's nice to be able to move the shades up partially during the day for privacy but still get natural light and be able to see the trees. I'm really happy with them, mostly for the utility but they also tie in pretty well with other parts of the house. more pictures of the house here.
sorry that I haven't posted for so long! I was in the french countryside and then paris for the last 2 weeks and had little or no internet access the entire time. I have plenty of inspiring things to post in the next few days.
I am really struggling to arrange this room! I definitely don't like the dresser in the corner...it's just temporary to put the tv on. I was thinking that getting some kind of white shelf to put the tv on would look better, but maybe I should just cave in and put the tv on the mantle. I don't know if it's possible to keep the tv in the corner there without it looking bad. If I put the tv on the mantle there will be plenty of space for books on both sides and the speakers, and I think the composition of the room will look more harmonious. it's too bad though because I hate making the tv such a central point of a room. we don't even have tv and only watch movies.
I just crammed all my books into that corner. this looks kind of cool in a way, but it definitely won't work long term.
does anybody have any ideas for me?
there's been lots of drama with building inspections recently, so finishing off the house is taking more time. in the meantime, we've been trying to organize the furniture somewhat. I'm pretty happy with how our kitchen table turned out. we started to hang some of rich's climbing photos and some artwork there. I think it looks so great! I have to buy some more frames before I can add any more.
that dresser isn't going to stay there. it's a really cute dresser, but I'm having trouble finding the right spot for it. I think I'm going to put a plant in the corner where that dresser is now.
we also finally got the gas insert in our fireplace, which will be the main source of heat for the house. it makes the room feel really welcoming and cozy (and super warm). the cover panel for it will be added later after the fireplace is inspected.
I have too many books and am trying to figure out where to put them all. I also haven't figured out how to integrate the tv and stereo into this area in a nonugly way yet. I definitely don't want to put the tv on the mantle. I'm thinking it should go in the corner behind the red chair on a simple white bookshelf or something like that.
all of this is so much work! I can't wait until we are finally settled in. you can check out photos of all the renovations so far here. it's amazing how much the house has changed!
